Irish Immigration advises international students to show that they have at least 10,000 euros in readily available funds for living costs. Besides proof of funds, the registration fee and private medical insurance are also worth checking.
According to Irish Immigration, the basic requirement for courses starting after 1 July 2023 is proof of 10,000 euros. For courses shorter than 8 months, the amount is 833 euros per month or 6,665 euros, whichever is lower.
Proof-of-funds amount
Irish Immigration advises that, for all study courses starting after 1 July 2023, students must show that they have at least 10,000 euros in readily available funds. This is said to be a guide to a student's living costs for one academic year. The content was checked as of 19 October 2026.
Irish Immigration advises that if the course is shorter than 8 months, students must have available, for each month of their stay, 833 euros or 6,665 euros, whichever is lower.
How you show proof of funds depends on whether you need a visa. People who need a visa are advised that they are not asked for proof of funds after arrival, and that whether they can support themselves is checked during the visa application review. People who enter without a visa must also show, after arrival, that they can pay their living costs.
| Course and how you enter | Funds you must show |

| Courses shorter than 8 months | 833 euros per month or 6,665 euros, whichever is lower |

Bank statements and how to show funds
Irish Immigration advises submitting a recent bank statement showing deposits and withdrawals for the last 6 months.
Large or irregular deposits, such as those from a student loan or the sale of property, are said to need a full explanation.
For degree-level students only, there is a pilot programme that allows an education bond to be used instead of bank statements. Irish Immigration advises that the bond can be cashed in on arrival, or if the visa is refused or the student decides not to enrol.
- For deposit and savings accounts, also attach a written statement from the bank confirming that the funds can be withdrawn
- If you have sponsors, a recent bank statement is required for each sponsor
- Credit cards are not accepted as proof of funds
Visa, registration and insurance costs
The Irish government advises that anyone studying for more than 3 months must apply for a long-stay "D" study visa. The standard visa application fee is 60 euros for single entry and 100 euros for multiple entry. On BLOOM ABROAD's Ireland visa and entry page, you can check entry and permission requirements with official sources.
According to the Irish Immigration FAQ, all students from outside the EEA, including those who do not need a visa, must complete initial registration in order to stay for more than 90 days. The registration fee is 300 euros. Payment is advised to be by credit card or debit card only.
All students from outside the EEA must have private medical insurance. Proof of cover is requested at registration, and cashback-type insurance is not accepted.
| Type of fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Visa application, single entry | 60 euros |
| Visa application, multiple entry | 100 euros |
| Student registration fee | 300 euros |
Tuition, part-time work and English courses
Irish Immigration advises that if the course fee is less than 6,000 euros, the full amount must have been paid before registration or renewal, and if it is more than 6,000 euros, at least 6,000 euros must have been paid.
There are also rules on how to pay. Schools may not ask for payment in cash, and tuition must be paid through an approved money transfer service or by bank electronic transfer.
Before enrolment, schools must tell students about all costs, including exam fees, learner protection costs and private medical insurance. A refund policy must set a maximum period for refunds, which must not exceed 2 months. Refund requests after a visa or entry refusal must be processed within 20 working days.
On part-time work, Irish Immigration asks students to show funds that can support their stay without relying on public funds or part-time work. Permitted working hours are up to 20 hours per week during term time, and up to 40 hours per week from June to September and from 15 December to 15 January.
There is a limit on how long you can take English courses; the Irish Immigration FAQ gives a maximum of 2 years.
Next steps
First, check the length of the course you want to take, and apply the amount of funds you need to show to Irish Immigration's requirements. Then, on BLOOM ABROAD's Ireland costs page, you can check official living-cost guides in your own currency.
If you also want to compare other routes, such as language study, co-op programmes and working holidays, you can compare them on the page on routes to Ireland. Before you apply, it is also a good idea to check Irish Immigration's latest guidance.
