What you can do
You can compare plans from Rogers, Fido and Freedom Mobile side by side and apply online while you are still in Japan. You can get advice in Japanese from a new contract through to cancelling, and if you will live there long term, they can also help you sign up for home internet from Bell or Rogers. They also handle SIMs and pocket Wi-Fi that keep a Japanese number for temporary returns, and SIMs and eSIMs for travel in the US, Mexico and Europe.
From applying to after you arrive
Choose a plan by carrier, length of stay or visa type, and pay the initial fee by card (Visa or Mastercard).
An eSIM arrives by email as early as the same day. A SIM card shipped to Japan is sent within 7 to 10 business days of applying (Rogers and Freedom SIM cards are shipped only within Canada).
When you arrive in Canada, swap in the SIM or set up the eSIM and start using it.
What sets it apart
You can choose from three mobile carriers at one contact point. Fido is a Rogers subsidiary, and offers 75GB for $35 a month. Rogers offers 5G with 100GB for $40 a month, and a bundle discount with home internet. Freedom Mobile offers 60GB for $54 a month, with unlimited calls and texts within Canada and the US.
Your visa type changes which carrier you can sign up with. Fido and Rogers need your passport plus a visa number for a student, work or working holiday visa, while Freedom can be signed up for with just a passport. The official site recommends plans by type of stay: Freedom for tourist visas (eTA) or stays under 6 months, Fido for students and working holidaymakers, and Rogers for work visas.
An eSIM arrives by email as early as the same day, so even if you apply just before departure, you can start using it from the airport in Canada. Inquiries are taken by form, email, phone and LINE, and phone or LINE is recommended when it's urgent.
It suits people who want to choose between Rogers-group and Freedom to match their visa and length of stay. If you are considering a Bell line, it's worth comparing it with other agencies as well.
