Frequently Asked Questions

Up to what age can I apply for Hungary's working holiday?
You must be between 18 and 30 when you apply for the temporary residence permit, or when you switch from the visa to it. The embassy page says this is not the time of the visa application.
Is there an annual quota for Hungary's working holiday?
Yes. The embassy page says Japanese nationals are subject to an annual quota and that you may be unable to take part if it is full. The Japanese MOFA list gives 200.
Where do I apply?
In Japan you apply at the Embassy of Hungary in Tokyo for a visa that is then switched to a temporary residence permit. Within 30 days of entering the Schengen area, you must go to the Hungarian immigration authority (OIF) to make that switch. The application form can also be filled in online.
Can I go to Hungary without a visa?
Japanese citizens with an ordinary passport may stay without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. A longer stay needs a visa or a residence permit.
