The two IELTS tests
IELTS comes in two versions, Academic and General Training. According to the official IELTS site, Speaking and Listening are the same in both, while Reading and Writing differ.
If you plan to study in an English-speaking country, Academic is usually the right choice. General Training is described as suitable for migrating to an English-speaking country or for study below degree level. Check which test your school or visa process asks for.
How band scores work
IELTS gives a band score for each skill. The overall band score is the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band.
According to the official explanation, an average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band. Check your target against what your school or visa process requires, skill by skill as well as overall.

Example course prices
In the fee table of HELP English Academy, four weeks of the IELTS and TOEIC courses cost USD 1,050 at Basic and Intermediate levels and USD 1,150 at Advanced. The same school’s ESL course is USD 900, so the exam courses cost USD 150 to 250 more (housing is extra).

- Whether each skill is taught separately (especially Writing and Speaking)
