The permit children need to study
According to the BI’s FAQs, the SSP is a permit for foreign nationals under 18 or taking non-degree courses. Children studying at a language school need an SSP.
The BI says children under 15 who are not accompanied by or coming to a parent need a Waiver of Exclusion Ground (WEG) before entry. For the SSP steps, see our article on the SSP and ACR I-Card.
An example of family course prices
The fee table of HELP English Academy lists a Family Program (Custom English for Families) at USD 1,000 per four weeks. The same school’s ESL course is USD 900 per four weeks (housing is extra for both).
An example of room rules
B&D English School offers a double room for two people booking together, such as siblings, friends or family. Children must be of junior high school age or older, and this pricing applies to family bookings where the child meets that age.
Room rules differ by school, so check before you apply whether a parent and child can share a room and what age conditions apply.
Health preparation
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends hepatitis A vaccination for unvaccinated travelers to the Philippines aged one or over. It notes that dogs infected with rabies are common in the country, so keep children away from unfamiliar animals.
Children’s vaccines depend on their age and history. See a pediatrician or travel clinic a few months before you leave.
What to check before you apply
When comparing schools for parent-and-child study, check these four points.
- The ages the school accepts and the type of lessons (one-to-one or group)
- Whether parent and child can share a room, and the room price
- Whether the parent also takes lessons, and the parent’s price
- The SSP procedure and cost for your child
