Qué ha cambiado

Japan's Immigration Services Agency changed the fees for change of status of residence, extension of period of stay and permanent residence from October 1, 2026.

Until now, the fee for a change or extension was a flat amount (6,000 yen at the counter, 5,500 yen online), but it now depends on the length of the period of stay granted.

For example, permission for 1 year costs 33,000 yen at the counter and 27,000 yen online. The fee for permanent residence went from 10,000 yen to 200,000 yen.

For online applications, you now pay at a convenience store or bank instead of with revenue stamps, and there is a separate payment charge.

From 1 October 2026 (the Agency announced the revision on 28 August 2026). The new fees apply to people who apply on or after 1 October 2026 and receive permission.

Excepciones

Applications received by September 30, 2026 are charged the previous fee, even if permission is granted on or after October 1. When you receive permission at the counter, you still pay with revenue stamps as before.

Stock at shops and similar places is limited, so the Agency advises buying the stamps in advance at a large post office or similar (cash only).

Check the Immigration Services Agency's dedicated page to see whether you qualify for a reduction or exemption.
