Preparing to leave for the Philippines goes more smoothly when you split the work into four tracks from eight weeks out: school, money, documents and daily life. Confirm the school place and start date first, then quotes and payment, and only then documents and packing. Study-related procedures and stay requirements differ by school, season and nationality, so confirm them through the school you apply to and through official sources.
Split the work into three blocks
| Timing | What to do | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| 8-6 weeks out | Fix school, course and weeks; collect and compare quotes; apply | Each school (quote and terms) |
| 4-2 weeks out | Confirm accommodation terms, payment, insurance, flights, packing list | School guidance, insurer, airline |
| 1 week out to departure | Paper and digital copies of documents, connectivity, arrival route | School arrival instructions |
The order matters because neither the amount you pay nor what you pack is decided until the school is. Working in reverse leads to replacements and deadline pressure.
8-6 weeks out: fix the school and the dates
- Fix one purpose and one length (a short intensive block, test preparation, restarting study as a working adult).
- Request quotes from several schools on identical terms. The BLOOM abroad listings show wide tuition ranges: Cebu USD 672-3,162 (JPY 142,000-334,000), Manila USD 890-1,540, Baguio USD 1,000-1,580.
- Check what each quote covers item by item: lessons, accommodation, meals, and how on-site fees are handled.
- Read the cancellation, change and refund terms before you apply, not after.
- Confirm start dates and any restriction on arrival days or hours.
Check city-level candidates on the Philippines country page, and search across conditions with cross-country search.
4-2 weeks out: money, accommodation, insurance
- Confirm payment method, deadline, and who bears transfer fees.
- If any fees are paid on site, confirm the timing and the currency.
- Check what travel insurance covers: treatment, personal effects, and rescuer costs. If you rely on card-attached cover, confirm the conditions and the maximum covered period.
- Confirm the room type and the house rules for laundry, meals and curfew.
- If you take regular medication, prepare an explanation in English and check carriage rules in advance.
- If the school handles study-related paperwork, confirm the required documents and how the fees are treated in its guidance.
1 week out to departure day: documents and logistics
- Check passport validity and carry application documents and booking confirmations in both paper and digital form.
- Re-read the school arrival instructions: airport meeting point, acceptable arrival window, contact number for the day.
- Lock in one form of connectivity: local SIM, eSIM or roaming.
- Share emergency contacts with family: the school, the insurer helpdesk, your diplomatic mission.
- Keep first-day cash and a backup payment method separately.
- Split checked and carry-on luggage, keeping documents and medication with you.
What to do in the first 48 hours
- Confirm the schedule and how level placement works at the school office.
- Write down the deadlines for any paperwork the school asks for.
- Walk the route to school and locate a clinic and a place to shop.
- Find out who to talk to if your health or routine slips.
- Set one learning goal for the first week and share it with your teacher.
Easy things to miss
What slips in preparation is usually the conditions rather than the amounts. What tuition includes, the change and refund terms, house rules and insurance exclusions all sit in areas that are hard to renegotiate later. If you might extend or shorten the stay, checking those terms before you start keeps your options open. Requirements and amounts can change, so confirm the latest with each school and with official sources. To work through the full cost picture, see the cost articles on the blog index.
